People in Fashion: Debra Hepburn

by Marisol Email

Although Caradiaz is all about jewellery (statement jewellery to be precise), we love fashion and the people that make it happen: from the designers, models and photographers to the magazine editors, stylists and shop owners.

So we have decided to pay them a little tribute whilst trying to get to know them a bit better through a series of exclusive mini-interviews and we're kicking off this month with the very lovely Debra Hepburn, co-founder of Young British Designers, the home of contemporary British fashion.

Here’s what Debra told us.

When did you set up YBD and what made you do so?
My partner, Julian Whitehead and I started working on Young British Designers in January of this year. We had always wanted to set up an online retail emporium and were particularly interested in young talent and increasingly, young ethical talent.

How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style was once described as ‘rock chic’ but it generally involves something pretty (lace/ floral/flounce) with battered ankle boots and cardies/military jacket/leather shirt kind of thing. I am lazy with bags and carry the same one until it falls off in despair. And I adore jewellery!

Do you have any fashion icons?
I admire so many people and their personal sense of style. It always makes me smile when I see someone loving fashion and being joyous in their dress and sharing it so generously, whether it is a fourteen year old with braided bunches and hand painted Doc Martens, or a beautiful old gent in a Florence Square with a flamboyant orange silk tie, crisp white shirt, trilby and a double breasted tweed suit. Wonderful!

We saw the X-Factor girls dressed in some of your outfits in this week's Grazia. Who else have you dressed and who would actually be your dream customer?
The X-Factor shoot was such good fun and it’s such a thrill to see our wonderful young designers being worn so publicly! We would like to see more high profile people wearing the wealth of talented fashion designers our country has on offer. I’d also like to see older people wearing younger designers! Maybe Judy Dench and especially Julie Christie, who I think is just gorgeous!

How do you relax?
I relax by reading – voraciously! Also through cooking and especially being with my wonderful family. I am so lucky. Oh... and online shopping too!

Are you an advice-taker or rather an advice-giver?
My husband says I am both! I thought I mainly gave advice but he reckons I listen to it too so...!

How will you be spending this Christmas?
Christmas will be spent surrounded by lots of folk, who will fly/ drive/ rail in from all directions to our home. It will be glorious chaos with cats, dogs and a turkey or two too!

A big thank you to Debra for taking the time to talk to us. We wish her and business partner Julian loads of success with Young British Designers.
